About
dR. mICHAEL vAN dER gRIEND
I am dedicated to caring for women of all backgrounds and believe that I offer a holistic, women's centred approach to Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Women should be afforded excellent care, be it on their Obstetric journey or for Gynaecological matters. For over 23 years I have experienced a wonderful rapport with my patients, I feel I am an effective listener and understand each women's individual needs.
I care for each woman in a calm, well informed and supportive manner.
In my practice I work together with Jane, who is a motivated and caring midwife. Her positive, warm personality is an additional support to both my patients and myself. Jan with her bright and bubbly personality is also a part of my team and has years of experience in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology field as a medical secretary.
Personally, I am a father and now a grandfather to four grown children and one grandson. I enjoy cycling, keeping fit and spending time with my wife and family.

Pregnancy and childbirth is an amazing time in anyone's lives, my focus is a happy and healthy outcome for both mother and baby. I will always manage your pregnancy individually and will always take the time to discuss your expectations, questions and concerns at each visit.
I have delivered over 5000 babies including quads, triplets and many sets of twins during my 20 years of experience. Each pregnancy is very individual and some involve medical difficulties, which I will manage confidently and effectively.
I gladly welcome your partner to be fully involved in your pregnancy. I want couples to achieve the happiest and safest outcome on this wonderful journey. It is a high priority to encourage normal birth, always making sure that both you and your baby are as safe as possible.
I am here to guide you in making the most informed decision possible for the health of yourself and your baby.
I will provide you with the most up to date, researched based information, support and advice.
My practice uses a high resolution 4D ultrasound machine. These scans can be digitally saved and taken home with you on a USB stick. I will personally be there for all your antenatal visits and will visit you daily during your hospital stay after your baby is born.
I work with an excellent group of ancillary specialists with outstanding reputations such as physiotherapists, mothercraft nurses, lactation specialists and acupuncturists.
It is and in fact always been a joy to assist so many couples realise their dream of becoming a family.
How is your due date calculated?
Your pregnancy is calculated from the first day of your last menstrual period rather than the day of conception. As women can have varying length in their cycle, this can affect the date. For example, a woman with a 35 day cycle will be due approximately 7 days later than a woman with a 28 day cycle.
During your first appointment I will calculate your estimated due date.
Calculate your expected due date by inserting the date of the first day of your last menstrual period in the Due Date Calculator.
Over the years I have worked towards a strong, evidence based practice. My aim is to provide the best professional support in a calm, kind and friendly manner. Communication is key and being sensitive to women's concerns.
I ensure that all patients understand their options, so they can make the best, most informed decision possible. I take a holistic and conservative approach and never hasten toward the surgical route unless warranted. I practice with understanding, respect and clear discussion. I am happy to assists in all aspects of general women's health including check ups, pre-pregnancy consultations and any issues that may require surgical intervention.
