About
dR. mICHAEL vAN dER gRIEND
I am dedicated to caring for women from all backgrounds and believe that I offer a holistic woman centred approach in my daily practice. Women should be afforded excellent care, be it on their obstetric journey to have a baby, also for all gynaecological matters. For over 23 years I have experienced a great rapport with my patients, and to understand each woman as an individual and to listen. My aim is to provide the best care possible, and support each woman in an accurate and well-informed calm manner in both my practise of Obstetrics and Gynaecological care. In my practice I work together with Jane Noble, a Midwife who is motivated and caring, who has a wonderful positive personality, to offer additional support to you.
Personally, I have a large family of four grown children and a grandchild. I enjoy cycling, keeping fit , and spending time with my wife and family. I take great pride in my work, and enjoy offering the best care I can.

In regards to childbirth, my focus is the most natural outcome for the birth of your baby, however I will always manage your pregnancy individually, always taking time to discuss your expectations or any concerns.
I have delivered over 5,000 babies over more than 20 years of practice, including quads, triplets, and many sets of twins, as well as many pregnancies with medical difficulties. I gladly welcome your partner to be fully involved in your pregnancy, and to help couples achieve the happiest and safest outcome that they deserve. It is of high priority to me to encourage normal delivery, however, always making sure that both you and you and your baby are as safe as possible.
I would provide you with the best research-based information, support and advice, to help you on your pregnancy journey, and use a high resolution 4D ultra sound machine. These scans can be saved digitally and taken home. I will personally be there at all of your ante-natal visits daily, and also visit you daily whilst in hospital for all of your post-natal period, to ensure your wellbeing. I work with an excellent group of ancillary specialists with outstanding reputations such as; physios, maternal care and mothercraft nurses and midwives and acupuncture. It is, and always has been a joy to help so many couples realise their dream of having children.
How is your due date calculated?
Your pregnancy is calculated from the first day of your last menstrual period rather than the date of conception. As women can varying in the length of their menstrual cycle, this can affect the due date. For example, a woman with a 35 days cycle will be due approximately 7 days later than a woman with a 28 day cycle.
On your first appointment I will tell you what your estimated due date will be
Calculate your expected due date by inserting the date of the first day of your last menstrual period in the Due Date Calculator.
Over the years I have worked towards a strong and evidence based practice. My aim in regard to women’s health is to provide the best and professional support, in a calm and friendly manner. I believe in communicating clearly and being sensitive to women’s concerns. To make sure that all my patients understand their options, so they can make the best, well informed decisions. I prefer always to take a holistic and more conservative approach, and never hasten into the surgical route unless warranted. I practice with understanding and respect, discussing clearly and mindfully all options with my patients. I am happy to assist you in all aspects of general women’s health issues and check-ups to more difficult problems which may cause surgical intervention.
